Stratheden Stud

100 prospects by Snowlands brother

December 22, 2008

By Brian Russell

Snippetson, the other Widden Stud sire who has first crop yearlings, also has over 100 prospects and those on offer at sales are likely to get a good reception. This is all the more so following the impressive achievement as a sire of his two years older brother Snowland from small pool of runners.

An AJC The Galaxy-Gr.1 winner and AJC Challenge Stakes-Gr.2 second, Snowland also went to stud at Widden, but was moved on following fertility problems. Despite this he has15 winners from that crop, including Absolut Glam, a winner of four races up to Group1 level and earner of $861,900 to date.

Although he did not win at Group1 level in his12 start career, Snippetson like his brother was a fleetfooted performer who who may have given the Galaxy at Randwick on April 22, 2006 a shake if connections had been able to get him to the post.

Unfortunately for them he did not race again after recording an impressive near all way win from a wide gate in the Maurice McCarten-LR (1200m) on the Golden Slipper program at Rosehill Gardens two weeks earlier. That was his 12th outing and first since his 2005 spring campaign, one that included a win over 1400m at the same track and a fourth in the STC Theo Marks Stakes-Gr.2.

Earlier performances included two successive wins in Sydney as a short priced favourite, appearances in the STC Eskimo Prince Stakes-LR (1100m) at Canterbury - in race record time of 1:3.77 and in a 1200m event at Warwick Farm, one he won by 3.3 lengths. Four seconds included outings in the AJC Challenge Stakes-Gr.2 and STC Missile Stakes-Gr.3 and among four trial wins were one at Hawkesbury by 7.0 lengths and one at Warwick Farm by 2.0.

Snippetson has the benefit of being from a mare, France bred Snowdrift, produced on a cross of tough superior performers. She is by Polish Precedent (Danzig Past Example, by Buckpasser) and from Snowtop, a stakes winning daughter of Thatching (Thatch Icing, by Prince Tenderfoot).
